If you sell or serve alcohol in Indiana, a significant rule change is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2025. The state has updated its law to say exactly who counts as an Indiana Alcohol Server. Knowing this list and ensuring that everyone on it is properly trained will help keep your business out of trouble.

Indiana Doorman

What The New Law Says

Bars & Restaurants (retail permits)• Managers
• Bartenders
• Waiters/Waitresses
Anyone who checks IDs or controls the door
Liquor & Package Stores (dealer permits)• Managers
• Sales clerks
Paint‑and‑Sip / Art Studios• Owners or workers who pour the wine guests bring in

If someone works on your licensed property and does one of those jobs, the state now calls that person an Indiana Alcohol Server.

Why It Matters

  1. ID checkers are on the hook. The new rule includes security staff and event contractors, as well as anyone who scans IDs or guards a 21-and-over area. If they let a minor inside, your permit is at risk.
  2. Training is required. Indiana law requires every alcohol server in the state to complete state-approved training before commencing work. Miss one employee and you could face fines or a temporary shutdown.
  3. Package stores aren’t off the hook. The update makes it crystal clear that liquor‑store clerks need the same training as bartenders.

What Owners and Managers Should Do Now

  1. List every role on your staff full‑time, part‑time, seasonal, or contractor. Ask, “Do they sell, serve, or check IDs for alcohol?” If yes, they’re an Indiana Alcohol Server.
  2. Get them trained early. You can enroll the team in the state‑approved Indiana Alcohol Server Training course from A+ Server Education. It’s online, quick, and covers carding rules, spotting fake IDs, and safe‑service steps. → Start the Indiana alcohol server course here
  3. Save the certificates. Keep digital or paper copies handy. Inspectors often ask for proof on the spot.
  4. Refresh skills often. Fake IDs get better every year. Set a yearly refresher to keep your crew sharp.
  5. Post clear house rules. Put your ID policy, drink limit rules, and incident log procedure in writing where staff can easily access them.

Bottom Line

Indiana didn’t just target the person pouring the beer; it widened the net to include anyone who touches alcohol sales or entry. By July 1, 2025, every Indiana Alcohol Server on your payroll, from the front‑door bouncer to the paint‑and‑sip host, must finish approved training.

Don’t wait for a surprise visit from enforcement. Train your team today with the easy online course from A+ Server Education and run your business with confidence.
