Washington MAST Class 12 vs Class 13 Permit

Washington MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Server Training) Class 12 and Class 13 permits are permits that allow individuals to serve alcohol in restaurants or bars.

The Class 13 permit is for servers who are 18 years old or older and work in establishments where 50% or more of the gross income comes from the sale of food.
  • Taking and processing orders for alcoholic beverages intended for consumption on the premises.
  • Delivering alcoholic drinks to customers for consumption on-site.
  • Opening and pouring beer or wine into a customer’s glass at their table.
The Class 12 permit is for servers who are 21 years old or older.
  • Managing a retail establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption.
  • Selling, mixing, or dispensing alcohol for on-premises consumption.
  • Supervising a Class 13 permit holder.
  • Class 12 permit holders are authorized to carry out all duties assigned to Class 13 permit holders.

Both permits require completion of a MAST training course and passing an exam. If you work without obtaining a valid mast permit, you could be fined up to: $1000.

Washington State liquor regulation requires that the MAST server training course must take a minimum of 3 hours, and the alcohol server permit training course covers a range of topics, including state laws and regulations, how to identify and prevent alcohol-related incidents, and strategies for managing difficult customers. The training is available online, making it accessible to individuals who wish to obtain a MAST permit at their own pace and convenience. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion, which they can use to until they receive the official permit in the mail. The program is required for those working in the Washington hospitality industry.

At the end of each class, students take a multiple-choice test. Students need a score of 80% to pass. More than 99% of students pass the test the first time they complete it. Students who fail may retake the test as many times until they pass the test. The test is designed to reinforce the learning process. It is not used to exclude students from the alcohol industry.

When do I need to get my MAST permit?

You must obtain your MAST permit within 60 days of your initial hire date if you’re working as a server, bartender, or manager at establishments that serve alcohol. There is no 60-day grace period for people who conduct alcohol tastings – they need their permit immediately.

What is requirements are needed for the Washington MAST Permit?

To obtain your alcohol service permit, you must complete an approved alcohol training course, such as A+ Server Education. After finishing the course, you need to pass the final exam with a score of 80% or higher. Once you have your permit, always carry it along with a valid form of identification, as you may be required to present them for inspection by law enforcement or alcohol inspectors.

Who needs a Washington MAST Permit?

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) requires a MAST Permit for:

    • anyone who mixes, serves, sells or supervises the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption at liquor-licensed establishments.

    • anyone who conducts alcohol tastings at an approved location.

    • anyone who fills growlers for off-premises consumption.

    • anyone who delivers alcohol for an on-premises establishment (e.g., cocktails to-go).

How long does the MAST course take and can I complete it in multiple sessions?

The class length will be a minimum of three hours with an exam at the end. You can complete this training over the course of several days or weeks, anytime of the day, 24/7. If you take the course online, you do not have to finish the course in one sitting. You may log out, return and pick up where you left off.

How long is my MAST permit valid and how do I renew it?

Permits are good for five years, and will expire on the first day of the month following the month you took your test. For example, if you took the test on June 20, 2024, your permit expires on July 1, 2029. Every 5 years you must renew your Class 12 Mixologist or Class 13 Servers Permit by retaking the course – permits cannot simply be renewed.

What’s the passing score and what happens if I fail?

You must pass the exam that will be given at the conclusion of the training with a score of 80% or better. From the training provider data, more than 99% of students pass on their first attempt, and those who don’t pass can retake the exam multiple times until they succeed.

Do I need to carry my physical permit while working?

Yes. You must have your MAST permit and a valid form of ID with you on the premises whenever you are selling, serving, or handling liquor. Your course provider is required to print and mail the permit to you within 30 days of completing the course. Please note that digital copies are not accepted, and temporary permits are not available. Anyone who does not have the required MAST permit within the required timeline may get a criminal citation with a maximum $500 monetary penalty, up to 90 days in jail, or both, and employers can also face fines and license suspensions.
