Common Questions

Washington MAST Permit FAQ

Everything you need to know about getting — and keeping — your MAST permit in Washington State.

When do I need to get my MAST permit? +

You must obtain your MAST permit within 60 days of your initial hire date if you’re working as a server, bartender, or manager at an establishment that serves alcohol. There is no grace period for alcohol tasting employees — they must have their permit before they start. Anyone working without a valid permit may face a criminal citation, fines up to $500, and up to 90 days in jail. Employers can also face fines and license suspensions for untrained staff.

Who needs a Washington MAST Permit? +

The WSLCB requires a MAST Permit for anyone who:

  • Mixes, serves, sells, or supervises the sale of alcohol for on-premises consumption at a liquor-licensed establishment
  • Conducts alcohol tastings at an approved location (restaurants, taverns, lounges, grocery stores)
  • Fills growlers for off-premises consumption
  • Delivers alcohol for an on-premises establishment (e.g., cocktails to-go)
How long does the course take? Can I complete it in multiple sessions? +

The course is a minimum of 3 hours as required by Washington State law. You can complete it across multiple sessions — log out anytime and pick up exactly where you left off, 24/7. Most students finish in a single sitting of about 3 hours.

What’s the passing score? What if I fail? +

You need a score of 80% or higher to pass the final exam. More than 99.9% of A+ students pass on the first attempt. If you don’t pass, you can retake the exam as many times as needed — completely free, no limit.

Note: Some competitors (including LiquorExam) limit you to just 2 exam attempts before requiring you to repurchase. With A+, unlimited retakes are always included.

How long is my MAST permit valid and how do I renew it? +

Your MAST permit is valid for 5 years. It expires on the first day of the month following the month you took the exam. For example: if you passed on June 20, 2025, your permit expires on July 1, 2030.

Permits are not renewable — you must retake the full course. A+ Server Education will email you a renewal reminder automatically in 5 years — no other provider does this.

Do I need to carry my physical permit while working? +

Yes. You must have your physical MAST permit card and a valid ID on you whenever you are selling, serving, or handling liquor on the premises. Digital copies are not accepted, and temporary permits are not available. Your official card is mailed within 30 days of completing the course. We provide an instant printable proof of completion so you can show your employer the same day you finish.

What’s the difference between Class 12 and Class 13? +

The Class 12 Mixologist permit is for servers age 21 and older — mix drinks, draw from taps, conduct tastings, manage the establishment. The Class 13 Server permit is for ages 18–20 — take orders, deliver drinks, pour beer or wine at the table.

A+ automatically issues the correct permit based on your date of birth. When you turn 21, we upgrade your Class 13 to Class 12 at no charge. Competitors like Craft Serving charge this as a separate product.

Why does the WSLCB require a Social Security Number? +

Under state law RCW 26.23.150, the WSLCB is required to collect Social Security Numbers for certain professional and occupational licenses — including MAST permits — to assist in child support enforcement efforts, as mandated by both state and federal law.

What happens if I lose my MAST permit? +

First, use the WSLCB’s MAST Permit Checker to confirm which provider originally issued your permit. Then call A+ Server Education at 877-740-5509. A $10 replacement fee applies. Only the original training provider is authorized to reissue a MAST permit card.

 Updated for 2026

Washington MAST Program: What You Need to Know

Washington law requires mandatory alcohol server training for anyone serving, selling, or managing alcohol at licensed establishments.

MAST Permit is Mandatory Within 60 Days of Hire

Under Washington State law, anyone who mixes, serves, sells, or supervises alcohol at a licensed establishment must obtain a MAST permit within 60 days of starting work. Tasting employees must be permitted before they start — no grace period applies.

Penalty for Working Without a Valid Permit

Employees caught working without a valid MAST permit face a criminal citation, fines up to $500, and up to 90 days in jail. Employers can also face fines and license suspensions from the WSLCB.

The WSLCB Does Not Offer Training Directly

The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board doesn’t run its own training program. It approves third-party education providers like A+ Server Education. Not all providers have the same track record — A+ has been WSLCB-approved since 2010.

Physical Permit Card is Required On-Premises

Washington State does not accept digital copies of the MAST permit. You must carry the physical card while working. Your card is mailed within 30 days of completing your course. We provide an instant printable proof of completion for use in the interim.
