At the end of each class, students take a multiple-choice test. Students need a score of 80% to pass. More than 99% of students pass the test the first time they complete it. Students who fail may retake the test as many times until they pass the test. The test is designed to reinforce the learning process. It is not used to exclude students from the alcohol industry.

You must obtain your MAST permit within 60 days of your initial hire date if you’re working as a server, bartender, or manager at establishments that serve alcohol. There is no 60-day grace period for people who conduct alcohol tastings – they need their permit immediately.
To obtain your alcohol service permit, you must complete an approved alcohol training course, such as A+ Server Education. After finishing the course, you need to pass the final exam with a score of 80% or higher. Once you have your permit, always carry it along with a valid form of identification, as you may be required to present them for inspection by law enforcement or alcohol inspectors.

The class length will be a minimum of three hours with an exam at the end. You can complete this training over the course of several days or weeks, anytime of the day, 24/7. If you take the course online, you do not have to finish the course in one sitting. You may log out, return and pick up where you left off.
Permits are good for five years, and will expire on the first day of the month following the month you took your test. For example, if you took the test on June 20, 2024, your permit expires on July 1, 2029. Every 5 years you must renew your Class 12 Mixologist or Class 13 Servers Permit by retaking the course – permits cannot simply be renewed.

Yes. You must have your MAST permit and a valid form of ID with you on the premises whenever you are selling, serving, or handling liquor. Your course provider is required to print and mail the permit to you within 30 days of completing the course. Please note that digital copies are not accepted, and temporary permits are not available. Anyone who does not have the required MAST permit within the required timeline may get a criminal citation with a maximum $500 monetary penalty, up to 90 days in jail, or both, and employers can also face fines and license suspensions.
